When silence is betrayal In his "Letter From a Birmingham Jail," Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, "There comes a time when silence is betrayal." What he wrote in 1963 to white clergy in segregated Alabama is still true today.
We need to recognize racism not as a black problem, but as a human problem. And at its root, it is a theological problem, because it is sin.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Jan. 18-25
"Pray Without Ceasing" is the theme of the 100th anniversary of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which United Methodists and others around the world will observe this month. The week will be observed Jan. 18-25, and its theme is taken from 1 Thessalonians 5:17.
The prayer of Jesus was that "we might become one," said Rev. W. Douglas Mills, an executive with the United Methodist Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns. "We, as United Methodists, are genuinely interested in unity, because unity is a gift from God."
More information and downloadable resources for the week can be found at www.geii.org/wpcu_resources.htm.

I Wonder... A Lenten devotions program "I Wonder. . ." is the theme of this year's Lenten Devotions program from the Society of St. Andrew, a national nonprofit hunger-relief ministry and United Methodist Advance Special #801600.
The devotions booklet is divided into five sections and challenges readers to take seriously the scriptural injunctions to care for the poor.
A Good Friday Fast, written by Ken Horne, executive director of the Society of St. Andrew, is a separate booklet that complements the Lenten devotions or can be used as a stand alone activity for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
All materials are free and a sample packet can be ordered for review before placing a congregational order.
Orders can be placed online at www.endhunger.org/lent.htm, by e-mail at church@endhunger.org or by phone at 800-333-4597. Orders for the devotional should be placed by Jan. 23 to ensure delivery before Ash Wednesday.
More information about the society is available at www.endhunger.org.
What hymns do you want in a new UM hymnal? This coming April the General Conference of the UMC will consider the recommendation for a new hymnal. This is the first of several research questions from the General Board of Discipleship. We want to know which hymns or songs you would like to see included. This survey will allow you to suggest titles to be considered for inclusion:
- Up to five titles from the current United Methodist Hymnal.
- Up to five titles from The Faith We Sing.
- Up to five titles not in either collection.
You may only complete the survey one time, so do not click the link below until you are ready to suggest titles. Once you have accessed the survey, you will not be allowed to return to it a second time, even if you did not complete it the first time or if you later wish to change your responses.
The final date to complete this survey is Jan. 31. Complete the survey at www.gbod.org/worship/default.asp?act=reader&item_id=45894.
